Well, this is a plague doctor. During the Plague, he and others like him walked through the devastated towns and said he would cure people, to satisfy them. Of course, he had no idea what he was talking about.
The really did look like this. At least, the had a beak and a hat like this. And goggles, although I don't think they actually had glass in it. The beak was actually filled with fragrant herbs, to keep away the stench of the rotting corpses he examined.
EDIT: Added two, count them TWO friggin' lightsources and some textures.
You wonder, why they took such great steps to keep themselves from getting it if they were supposed to be able to cure it. Apparently no one back then wondered.

OMG....this is brilliant. Its amazing. what did you use to draw it? I have a small plague doctor fetish...I like no...LOVE the shadows in it....it's brilliant.
I remember reading about black plague doctors, and I was fascinated by the bird mask costumes (and a little scared by them). I like your interpretation very much.
Yeah, I saw a poster made by some kids from my school hanging on the wall, and it had a pic of this medieval drawing on it. The beak and the hat; I mean, how could I NOT remember it?

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
I'm featuring a little part of the deviant community ! Asked few days ago, and requested everyone to show me their 3 favourites photos in their own gallery, and the 3 most popular!
So, here is it.
Follow me if you want to be in the next feature, I'll create a new poll for it soon!
